So, the “Disney gig” that I got was to be a substitute musician.

A substitute musician is like a substitute teacher. Substitute teachers are not faculty; they are on call, to come in when someone is sick or on vacation, etc.

As a substitute musician, I am on call, to come in when someone is sick or on vacation, etc.

This means I am not given a set schedule or guaranteed any work at all. Whether I get to work or not depends on whether full-time band members are available to do their jobs or not.

In June I had to learn music and choreography, so I was lucky to be scheduled for rehearsals. In addition, the band was on a 7-day schedule, so I was scheduled to come in ahead of time to cover for the ACTUAL trombonist’s known doctors appointments, vacation days, etc.

The band is now on a 5-day schedule, meaning two fewer days that ANYONE will get to work in the park, meaning I am likely to be called less. On top of that I have not been given any dates in advance for August, like I had in July.

TL;DR I’m a substitute musician, not a regular member, which means I am on call and only get work when someone else can’t be there to do their job. I hope that explains why I need to find, you know…Actual Work haha
