It occurs to me that in my excitement, yesterday's post got spazzy and long-winded.
Here is a summary of the information for those who wanted it.
DEXA Scan:
- Uses X-rays to determine body composition (bone density, fat mass/location, muscle mass/location)
- Takes about 3 minutes to complete and does not require fasting.
- Results can tell you if you need to work on improving bone density, or lean muscle mass, or if you have uneven fat distribution that can contribute to health problems.
- People trying to lose weight, or improve bone density, can take a DEXA every few months to see their progress as they make lifestyle changes.
My DEXA results:
- Bone density is average
- Good fat distribution and ratio of lean mass to fat mass
- I have 26% fat mass, which is considered healthy
- Left arm and leg have more fat than the right side, which is funny because I'm left-handed.
- Dietitian recommended weight lifting to maintain and improve lean mass, and even out right and left side strength.
Dietitian Consultation:
- Reviewed bloodwork and DEXA results with me
- Made suggestions based on my goals of maintaining current weight and improving health
- Suggested a calorie range based on height, weight, and activity levels
- Suggested dietary changes that should be beneficial (and if they don't work I'm to let her know so we can adjust)
- Suggested a change in macronutrients to help avoid health problems later in life
- Suggested a complete digestive enzyme to assist with problem foods
- Made specific food recommendations
- Answered all questions regarding nutrition, health, exercise, and genetic factors
My specific results:
- Increase protein by 5%, decrease carbs by 5%
- Reduce sugar to 45g or less
- Improve fiber intake
- Lift weights for 15 minutes, 3x per week
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR):
- Measures how many calories you burn at rest
- Requires fasting (digestion is an "activity" that burns calories)
- Can take up to an hour, requires relaxation for a long period of time to get an accurate measurement
- Goal is to compare results to the dietitian's calorie recommendations and adjust as needed
- Gonna take this test on 02/19 in Memphis
