See, I've heard a lot about the US school music system and this sounds like the best of it... just giving people an opportunity to experience this, try things out, be part of something, and get out of their home town as a bonus. There was absolutely nothing like this available where I went to school, back in the UK; my partner (who's also British) did get heavily involved in youth orchestras, but he only had that opportunity because he'd already independently discovered an instrument he loved. (Drums / percussion, starting from aged about 7.) There used to be more of this in the community, especially where I'm from where all the collieries had brass bands, but the pits shut down in the 80s and the bands went with them and now there's nothing. Still a bit more of that kind of thing here in New Zealand, which sometimes feels like it's stuck in the 1970s, but sometimes in a good way.
Anyway when I finally did get into playing music it was bass guitar first, for me, so I think I know what you mean about The Power :D And constantly getting to learn and experience new aspects of music sounds brilliant!
