Day from Hell
Sep. 19th, 2021 11:41 amI had meant to post about my last day at work yesterday, but so much happened in such a short time.
A summary of yesterday:
- Jameson woke up yesterday morning with intense lower back pain. He went to the emergency room and it's kidney stones.
As everyone knows, this is NOT fun. He's been struggling with pain and nausea. Last night was a rough night. This morning he's drinking a big glass of cranberry juice and eating some toast while on oxy, before the nausea sets in, so I hope he's able to keep his fluids IN and flush the stones OUT.
- It was my last day at work.
I left for work just as Jameson was taking himself to the emergency room (yes I did offer to take him but he insisted on going himself). I brought treats for my coworkers, the pretzels and the homemade caramels. Everyone really enjoyed them! I had a brief standoff with my bosses about bringing "food to share", which we're technically not supposed to do due to covid, but either because it was my last day or because I had been extra-responsible about it (individually-packaged everything, only giving the food to specific people, not just slapping up a "FREE FOOD" sign) I was allowed to continue giving out my treats throughout the day. At the end of the day my coworkers presented me with a card that they'd all signed, and a planner for 2021 and 2022. I was extremely touched by this. A lot of people have quit in the past two months, and I know I didn't sign cards for those folks. It makes me feel like maybe I DID make a small difference at CapTel. I really will miss the people there, and I hope we can all keep in touch. I will never forget how this job saved me during the pandemic. The planner is coming with me on tour.
- My computer died a horrible, inconvenient death.
After saying my goodbyes at work, I headed home. Jameson had been keeping me updated throughout the day on his condition and diagnosis. Of course I wanted to get home quickly and check on him. He was doing "ok", I mean as ok as you can be in intense pain.
Wanting to let him rest in peace and quiet, I decided to practice some steno while he slept. Turned on my computer and it just started SCREAMING. Beeping loudly, BIOS fails, and a QR code which took me to a page that informed me of "Error 142 - Hard Failure". After a little research I understood that this meant my hard drive was dead, and I'd need to replace it. Considering that my computer has been acting up for the past month, and considering that it's 5+ years old, and considering that I'd been planning to get a new laptop on Black Friday this year anyway, I decided to just bite the bullet and get a new laptop NOW. With only ten days until tour begins, anything I'd order wouldn't arrive in time, and I'd miss my last chance at taking steno tests. I already had a short list of features I was looking for in a new PC (SSD, 8G RAM, and at least a 10th gen i5 HD) so I just took that to Best Buy and said, "What do you have in stock that's anything close to these stats?"
They had pretty much three with all of the stats I wanted and in my price range: an HP Pavilion, a Dell something-or-other, and a Lenovo. I wasn't feeling the Dell (yes I know they all have the same hardware inside, I just wasn't feeling it, ok) and between the HP and the Lenovo, for $100 more the Lenovo had a better screen and nicer graphics card, so I was like, what the heck. Let's do it.

Thank God for the Cloud, and OneDrive. The only thing I might have permanently lost is my most recent steno dictionary, which while it will be a pain to rebuild, it's not impossible. Everything else had been uploaded to the cloud just that morning. It took less than an hour to regain access to everything and have this new computer all set up.
So that's it! What a day, huh.
Jameson is watching tv and eating toast, pretty soon I'm going to check on him to see if he wants more.
I'm procrastinating on setting up my steno software by typing this entry...but here we are at the end, so I guess it's time to find out how much work I've got on my plate for steno. Argh.
Ten days until I fly out to start rehearsals for TOOTSIE. Good lord. I need to practice.
